Covid-19 driven responses are driving innovation across the Australian economy.  This is no less so for the Fair Work Commission.  The Commission’s online/remote platform for hearing matters is now routine.  Deputy President Clancy and Commissioner Johns will present a practitioner focused  information session on the “virtual Commission”.

Deputy President Richard Clancy

Deputy President Richard Clancy commenced his appointment at the Fair  Work Commission on 3 February 2016.  He has since held the following leadership positions within the Commission:

  • National Practice Leader - Unfair Dismissals from 10 October 2016 – 19 August 2019;
  • National Practice Leader - Small Business from 5 August 2019 – 4 July 2021;
  • National Practice Leader - Anti-Bullying from 10 February 2020 – 4 July 2021;
  • Deputy Regional Co-ordinator for Victoria & Tasmania from 1 April 2019 – 4 July 2021; and
  • Regional Co-ordinator for Victoria, South Australia & Tasmania from 5 July 2021.

Prior to his appointment to the Commission, the Deputy President was Director of Workplace Relations at the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI). While serving in that role, he attended the 104th Session of the International Labour Conference of the ILO in Geneva as an adviser to the Australian Employers’ delegation.

Deputy President Clancy was admitted to practise as a Barrister & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 1 April 1996, practised in Industrial and Employment law at the Victorian Bar (2001-2006) and has previously been employed in various Employee Relations and Human Resources roles in the private sector.

Commissioner Leigh Johns OAM

Commissioner Leigh Johns OAM was appointed Commissioner with Fair Work Commission in April 2013.

He is an experienced Commissioner with a demonstrated history of working in the quasi-judiciary industry. Skilled in Collective Bargaining, Legal Compliance, Government, Arbitration, and Dispute Resolution.

Prior to his appointment, Commissioner Johns held senior roles as

  • CEO - Australia Building and Construction Commission
  • Chief Counsel – Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Prior to the above public sector roles, Commissioner Johns enjoyed an active industrial and employment law practice in his roles at:

  • Partner – Australian Business Lawyers
  • Senior Associate – Holding Redlich
  • Sly Weigall

He is a graduate of the University of Melbourne.

Commissioner Johns is the current Treasurer for Australia Employment Relations Association (Inc) and the NSW Branch of ALERA – the NSW Industrial Relations Society
